Ingredients

Frosting Ingredients
  • 1 cup whole milk Whole milk will yield the creamiest texture, but 2% milk can be used.
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour, sifted Sifting flour helps avoid lumps for a smooth frosting.
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature Use good quality butter for the best flavor.
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed Moist light brown sugar enhances the taste.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Use pure vanilla for the best flavor.

Method

Create the Flour Mixture
  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisk together the milk and flour. Cook this mixture for 3-5 minutes until it thickens, resembling a very thick pudding. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
Cream the Butter & Sugar
  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the room temperature butter and packed brown sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 5-7 minutes.
Combine Mixtures
  1. With the mixer still running, add the cooled milk mixture to the bowl and beat on medium-high speed until combined, approximately 2 minutes.
Whip It Up!
  1. Switch to the whisk attachment, add vanilla extract, and whip on high speed for 7-8 minutes until the frosting is smooth and creamy.

Notes

This frosting can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. Re-whip before using to restore its fluffy texture.
